The national 'State of the Environment Report' left no doubt about the systemic crisis facing our endemic wildlife and flora - and a crisis requires bold commitments.
Last week Taronga welcomed Australian Minister for the Environment and Water @tanyaplibersek and @tscommissioner Dr Fiona Fraser to unveil the details of a bold new national Threatened Species Action Plan.
This plan, rightly sets out a commitment to no new plant or animal extinctions as well as a number of other important targets around habitat protection, combatting threats to wildlife and the inclusion of First Nations’ knowledge in conservation.
In spite of the challenges, we know we can make a difference. There are seven species that without the work of Taronga and our partners, would most likely be extinct today, and we are confident that together, with our expertise in research and conservation, and animal care we can significantly add to the number of species saved in the years ahead.
Conservation happens with collaboration, and here at Taronga we look forward to working with with Federal Minister Plibersek, NSW Minister @jamesgriffinmp and our partners across universities, governments, conservation organisations and businesses, as well as the 2 million+ guests we welcome through our gates every year to achieve the outcomes of this plan.
