US. A book that is decades in the making. For more than 30 years I’ve been buying signs from people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. What started as a personal art project turned into exhibits across the US and in the UK, a documentary called Signs of Humanity, an annual march, presentations and workshops to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
These are photos of our team working on the first volume of a coffee table book of signs, some with captions and stories, some as old as 30 years ago. It’s an enormous endeavor and one that will add to the impact of this project. I have a vision of someone flipping through this book, maybe they stop on a sign that catches their eye. They read it once, then again, and something shifts. A perspective changes. A door opens. Maybe the next time they see someone holding a sign on the street, they don’t just look away. Maybe they choose compassion. Maybe that small moment moves the needle and pushes the kindness dial forward, creating a more empathetic world. One that values all humans. That’s the hope. That’s why this book matters.
That’s why it’s called US.
I’m beyond grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey—whether you’ve come to an exhibit, a presentation, watched the documentary, carried a sign in a march, helped us make blessing bags, donated, or simply had a conversation about homelessness because of this project. This book is another way to keep that conversation going. And I couldn’t be more excited. And if you know of any good publication tips or resources or strategies please let us know! 🩷🙏🏽 #weareallhomeless #signsofhumanity #whatishome
