To know how many giraffe there are in a population is a vital first step in their conservation. Working with the Twiga Walinzi team, Mugie Conservancy and guides from Ekorian Lodge and Governor’s Camp, we recently conducted a rapid assessment of the number of endangered reticulated giraffe in the Mugie conservancy on Kenya's Laikipia Plateau in light of new proposed road developments in the area. Every giraffe has a unique coat pattern which helps us with counting them. The guides at the camps will continue to take ID photos and upload them to our GiraffeSpotter database to create an individual record for each giraffe.
