“We need more women in Star Wars-NO WE DON'T!” We’ve all heard the sound going viral right now of a podcast where a woman is claiming that Star Wars needs to be something we “let the men have”🙄 I’d like to offer my perspective as a Plus Size Woman, who very much enjoys Star Wars and its recent inclusivity. If you haven’t yet, watch the interview 2 little girls did with President Barbie AKA Issa Rae on the Golden Globes red carpet. One of the little girls said “I want to be President Barbie because YOU were President Barbie” (Speaking to Issa Rae). And her response was “You CAN”. THIS is the reason why we need more women in Star Wars. It isn’t because it’s a “feminist agenda” or “woke”. It’s because for so long, women in these films & fandoms made themselves smaller because of the amount of men that dominated the space. We didn’t think we were able to be fans, let alone see ourselves in the films besides a few characters. The introduction to more women & especially, women of color, in the Star Wars universe allows us all to enjoy and participate in a fandom that used to be entirely made up of men. After all-isn’t it more fun when more people can enjoy it? I will never understand “letting men have something” when they’ve always had it-and always been allowed to have it. All women want is to be welcomed and included in a space that has always allowed men. Women make Star Wars what it IS. They give the stories heart, soul and meaning. We deserve that. Can we please let little girls watch these films and idolize Rey and Ahsoka and Sabine and Rose Tico and Leia and Padme? Women deserve to see themselves as Main Characters, always.
