SS23 “CELESTIAL BEING”, Voodoo or Juju or Vaudou aka Witchcraft is a topical subject and an intriguing phenomenon in Africa. Thriving on belief systems, it baffles and confronts ruling society with dilemmas on how to deal with it. Africa experiences grim consequences by the entrenchment of witchcraft including social exclusion, expulsion and even murder of alleged witches or enlightened beings. This collection charts the examination of the discourse of this divinity practice through the use of two elements, glass and sisal (Agave sisalana). Before colonial rule, witchcraft, formed an integral part of social structure in most traditional African societies, with anti-witchcraft measures beginning during colonial invasion, it was /is considered that the practice is considered a crime in itself. To treat is as such involves the admission that witchcraft has a real force and can be effective to produce physical consequences. This collection celebrates the celestial beings (gods or deities) of ancient African culture and spirituality by using the materiality of Sisal and glass, we imagine a world of understanding, using them as tools in divination. Sisal is an integral part of ancient and modern day space design and architecture but also a healing fiber. Glass is seen as an archaic relic, a deceptively adaptable medium acting as a societal mirror, reflecting power, conflict, change and belief. These two mediums offer us not only a respite from present day sensory bombardments, but a space to examine who we are. Is voodoo truly our secret power and if so why do we harness such negativity towards it? This body of work is centered on our continuous ethos of borderless ideologies via materiality through time and space. Such icons of reasoning did not entirely vanish instead they merely shifted ideology with time and space. Here we find God or the Sublime for the modern age. For this piece we celebrate Umale Okun, god of the sea Currently on display at @templemuse until Nov 23 Creative direction Bubu Ogisi Photography @reeddavisphotography
