The single greatest cause of unnatural death for pisiskôwak (animals) in Jasper National Park, is getting hit by automobiles. It’s a problem. Which has a solution. There is no need for fences. There is no need for underpasses or overpasses. That approach would cost the tax payers billions of dollars. And they are only band-aids. Half-ass solutions that favour the driver over the rights of the animals. That approach would also take away from the experience. And it would take away space. There is a simpler solution. One that saves you, the taxpayer, money. Ready? Here it is...... SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! It’s that simple. This solution also takes time. But we while that time is taken from you, it’s then gifted back so that you can use it to enjoy the National Park experience. It’s a win-win. Driving through the Park on the Yellowhead is a distance of about 80kms. If we slowed the speed down to 70kph from the posted 90kph, and as slow as 30kph in the highest mortality zones, it would add 10-15 minutes to the drive. In the grand scheme of things, that’s a couple of trips to the bathroom. It’s time to give a shit people! Maybe two shits! The trucking industry will need to adjust. It’s not rocket science. It’s common sense. And as we all rely on those who work that industry, we’ll need to be a little more patient for the delivery of our “stuff”. It’s just stuff. It’ll get there. I’m sure this post is going to anger some people. Those who forgot about A to B. Those who are only interested in A or B and not the journey. So be it. Get angry. Post all the nasty comments you like. They change nothing. Least of all the death of an animal. It’s time to get over ourselves my friends.
