Happy to announce 1 st art photography exhibition in Hong Kong China . @sayaka_maruyama_ Floral Beings - Sayaka Maruyama Solo Exhibition Opening 18/8 | 6-8pm More than two years ago, I came across the most unique and eye-opening artist duo in Japan - Sayaka Maruyama @sayaka_maruyama_ and Tomihiro Kono @tomikono_wig . Their meticulous craftsmanship of traditional hair weaving, combined with an avant-garde vision, resulted in these flabbergasting wigs that they call ‘hair props’ -- all handmade with real hair, bleached and dyed by themselves. Their work straddled the worlds of design, craft, fashion and contemporary so well I felt it was the epitome of what I was looking for all along. So I messaged them on Insta to see if they’d like to do something together, and we’ve been cooking something delicious for the longest time! I’m delighted to announce Floral Beings, a part 1 exhibition of the duo, focusing on the magical works of Sayaka Maruyama. Her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong will exhibit 13 works at Duddell's, and I’d love to invite you all to join us next Thursday for the opening at 6-8pm. (RSVP for a free drink!) 💖🌹🍸 Maruyama shows us a glimpse into her surreal world, where human, animal and plants are mingled into one. Her dreamlike photography, sometimes integrated with digital drawings, translates human beings as floral creatures, using Tomihiro Kono’s hair creatures as a main motifs. Maruyama works closely with her partner on sculptural wigs made of real human hair, which they hand-dye and weave into intricate animal-like structures.
