@asherald uses portraiture to bring people of color—often neglected as painting subjects—into art history.⁣ ⁣ Here we see a young man, his skin and attire mostly rendered in neutral tones of grey and brown to resemble 19th-century photographs of African Americans. Due to Sherald’s affinity for painting mostly anonymous figures—outside of her commissioned portraits of Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor—we know little about this sitter. But given the portrait’s title, taken from the opening line of Jane Austen’s "Pride and Prejudice," we might conclude that he "must be in want of a wife."⁣ ⁣ 👀 You can see this work by Sherald in our Art of the Americas Wing—on view in conjunction with our presentation of "The Obama Portraits Tour," which features the artist's iconic painting of Mrs. Obama.⁣ ⁣ 🖼️: "A single man in possession of a good fortune" (2019), oil on canvas, Collection of Lizbeth and George Krupp.⁣
