@asherald uses portraiture to bring people of color—often neglected as painting subjects—into art history.⁣ ⁣ Here we see a young man, his skin and attire mostly rendered in neutral tones of grey and brown to resemble 19th-century photographs of African Americans. Due to Sherald’s affinity for painting mostly anonymous figures—outside of her commissioned portraits of Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor—we know little about this sitter.
