We took our first overnight backpacking trip since living full-time in Silver City and I'm so grateful for this amazing backyard. Thinking about trips like this always bring a sense of calm and connection when I’m feeling burnout or anxiety. The last time we ventured this way was October 2020 and previously in 2019 on my CDT thru-hike and I'm always impressed with the beauty in the Gila Wilderness. For a February backpacking trip, the dormant Cottonwood trees and barren branches were a lovely added bonus. Setting off from the TJ corral, we hiked towards the West Fork of the Gila River about 5-6 miles and found a perfect campsite on a saddle. The next day we continued to the high route and circled back towards Bear Creek Canyon to meet with the Middle Fork of the Gila. I noticed on the map a slot canyon that seemed like shortcut to Bear Creek and we decided to go for it. Dropping 200 feet in less than a quarter to half a mile was a challenge enough and felt like training for the Hayduke Trail as we down climbed over boulders and slipped through thin crawl spaces. We finally landed in Bear Creek Canyon and walked along the trickling creek to the intersection with the Gila. We watched the remaining sunset light shimmer over the river and canyon rocks while we gathered firewood and enjoyed a night around a campfire and fully appreciating this beautiful place. The next morning was a slow-going hike back to the van and the hour-ish drive back to town had Jerry fast asleep in my lap. 😻 We chose Silver City because of the proximity to these wilderness areas and the magical Gila River. Trips like this are easy reminders of our good decision and that adventure isn’t too far out of reach.
