A survivor among the rest. This amazing young, female galapagos shark has a jaw that is almost completely detached. Her jaw is broken so badly she actually has part of her gills hanging on the outside of her mouth. This is likely caused by large-scale fishing. Industrial fishing is destructive is extremely harmful to wildlife. These broken jaws are unfortunately a VERY common thing for us to see. And it has been even more common in the last year. Sharks are the ones who are balancing out the ecosystem and maintaining these fish stocks that humans rely so heavily on. If we continue to kill sharks then those fisheries will also collapse. You can help keep this from happening by minimizing your seafood consumption, or by only eating seafood from a local and small scale source. Key on the small scale aspect to ensure other animals aren’t caught as bycatch. Every small step really makes a difference for these incredible animals🌎
