Red-tailed Hawk 22-807 arrived at Ojai Raptor Center on October 11 after having been pellet shot. The hawk appeared to have been shot twice, as she had two entry wounds plus an exit wound on the wing. The one pellet was still present and visible in the radiograph. Veterinarian Dr. Stephany Lewis removed the pellet from just under the skin in the left wing of the hawk. The patient had her wounds cleaned and dressed three times per week, along with some physical therapy to keep the bandaged wings mobile. The locations of the wounds made physical therapy more difficult. Both of these procedures were performed under gas anesthesia. She also received oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pain medications, and anxiety reducers twice daily. The hawk has recovered well after experiencing quite a lot of soft tissue trauma from the pellets. She has graduated to our largest aviary for reconditioning. The patient is expected to fully recover and be released in two to three months. This hawk is just one of many arriving at ORC with wing injuries needing extensive treatment and care. This #GivingTuesday, help support these patients by donating at the link in bio. The Shanbrom Family Foundation has generously offered to match all donations up to $15,000! #raptors #Raptor #birdofprey #hawks #hawk #redtailedhawk #birds #wildliferehabilitation #givingseason #GIVINGTUESDAY
