The armed conflict in #Ukraine severely impeded food and fertilizer exports through the Black Sea, driving global prices to new highs and plunging the world deeper into a food crisis. OCHA played a leading role in discussions around the Black Sea Grain Initiative – agreed upon by the Russian Federation, Türkiye, Ukraine and the United Nations in July – which allowed exports to resume safely. By mid-December, more than 14 million metric tons of grain and other foodstuffs had been safely transported under the initiative. As we entered 2022, we did not anticipate all of the many disastrous events that happened across the world. However, the humanitarian community persisted.
