Street vendors carry systems of joy. Raspados carry codes of survival. Sweetness carries power. For nearly two decades, I’ve walked with the vendors who build public space with their carts, their labor, and their spirit. In 2007, I invited a paletero into the gallery, serving paletas during my opening. 2009 I installed a 40’ mosaic and spray mural of a raspado vendor on the side of a housing development in Barrio Logan San Diego,CA. In 2010, I remixed American Spirit cigarette packaging into Amexican Spirito, weaving protest, Ojo de Dios, and stickers into a new language of resistance. In my murals, raspado carts sit alongside sacred geometries and everyday survival. This work belongs to a larger practice—where street economies become ceremonies, and everyday objects carry ancestral codes. On July 3, a melting ice block sculpture faced the courthouse. A raspado cart offered sweetness where the system offers coldness. The street became an altar. The people became witnesses. This is how we melt ICE together. By building community with presence, with joy, with purpose, with art that shifts the atmosphere. #RaspadoResistencia #BorderlessHealing #SweetnessAsResistance #StreetRituals #PublicArtAsCeremony #DecolonizeCommerce #ArtOfThePeople #FUCKICE #JusticeIsSweet #W3RC #wercalvarez
