A big deal when @nytimes and @pete_wells anoint a new member of the 4 star club - something that hasn’t happened since 2015. Congratulations to @yoshinonewyork for joining this exclusive club! Now, im not sure if I’ll ever be able to dine at Yoshino, and there’s no doubt it is a restaurant that is objectively out of the reach of many people. But there’s no denying that this is a city of dreams, and it was enormously satisfying to shoot with Chef Tadashi Yoshida for this review, because it was clear that while we were shooting he was truly living his dream. Chef Yoshida was gracious and playful during our shoot (and patient with the time it took to set up for some of these cinema graphs!) but also visibly emotional. I had done some photos for the restaurant when they opened last year, so I knew that Chef Yoshida had sacrificed and risked a lot to close his acclaimed restaurant in Nagoya to stake his claim in the NYC sushi scene. And I could see that he was enormously proud and moved by being photographed for The New York Times - the mere recognition by the paper of record, not even knowing the outcome, was enough to make him feel like his dreams were being made real. It was great to be there to document that.
And while im not typically doing a lot of video, it was great fun to be asked to make these cinema graphs that the Times is increasingly deploying in some of their restaurant reviews. Im really pleased with how they turned out, and they were a breeze to capture with my @nikonusa z9 which has proven itself to be a truly phenomenal camera in the few months ive owned it.
Thanks for a great assignment @gabrielheliosanchez 🙏
