How to pose like an expert:
1. MOVE Fluidly! Move with ease and *try* not to be stiff. The best “candid” photos happen through movement like adjusting your clothing, looking off to the side, flipping hair, closing your eyes and opening them, ect.
2. Every camera click, move something! We don’t need 20 photos of the same exact pose, so if you hear the click of the camera move your head into a different angle, lower your jaw, raise your jaw, change your leg position, smile, fake laugh, go serious, cross your arms...ect. If something looked REALLY GOOD, I’ll probably make you do it again. The more you change it up, the more photo options you will have to select from, which means better odds of a shot you like. Yes it feels weird to fake laugh, but no one will see these photos unless you share them, so what do you have to lose?
3. Put on music! Music can put you into a “flow state” of better performance, joy, and might make the process of a Photoshoot less miserable for those of you that don’t like being in front of the camera.
4. Practice posing in the mirror- IN YOUR SHOOT OUTFITS. This can take 3 minutes or 15 minutes- it doesn’t have to take a ton of time. Try standing and sitting poses so you can see how your clothing fits and moves, and what angles you find flattering.
5. Fake it till you make it. If all else fails and you’re still nervous about posing, pretend like you’re someone else. I always like to say posing for the camera is kind of like acting. Create the persona of whoever you want to be, and emulate how you think they would pose. Take yourself out of the equation.
