To play Tammy Wynette, @jessicachastain spent years studying her life and recordings, and searched for a way to perform the country music legend’s songs. ⁠ ⁠ “No one else can sing like her,” Ms. Chastain said, “but I’m an actor. In the same way she could tell a story through a song, that’s how I’m going to try and approach it.” ⁠ ⁠ She recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in “George & Tammy,” about the “Stand By Your Man” singer’s combustive relationship with fellow music giant George Jones. The six-part Showtime series started as a film script. Ms. Chastain, an executive producer, stuck with the biopic for 10 years as it searched for a home and a leading man. Starring Michael Shannon as Jones, “George & Tammy” premiered Dec. 4 as Showtime’s most-watched debut for an original series, thanks to a simulcast on sibling cable networks and streaming platform Paramount+.⁠ ⁠ The show tells the story of how two of country’s most potent solo forces orbited each other through marriage, divorce and duets fueled by the tumult of their relationship.
