Maison Margiela Couture
Maison Martin Margiela and sartorial excellence are synonymous. The house takes a cerebral approach to deconstructing, reinventing, and redefining men's and womenswear silhouettes. With superb craftsmanship, a sense of invisibility has been embedded into the brand's DNA since its inception in 1988.
To capture the attention of his audience and place their focus on his garments and solely his garments, Martin Margiela introduced the regular use of 'masks' on the runway. From linen cloths to sunglasses to natural masks made up of his models' hair, concealing models' identities has been central in Margiela's collections.
Following his departure in 2009, the house was left to keep this delicate ethos intact and operate under a faceless facade. For the 2012 Haute Couture collection, the house released 15 unique looks and, in the process, redesigned Margiela's facemasks. Ironically, the bejeweled masks caught the most attention during the presentation and are seen as the collection's highlight. They would then become immortalized throughout Kanye West's Yeezus tour, in which he wore several of these haute couture masks.
