The ice is in a hurried retreat. The distance it has fallen back, both in length and volume since I moved to the Asiniwaciya 34 years ago is phenomenal.
The Athabasca Glacier’s days are numbered nitotemwak. As are the motorized activities that take place upon its surface. In my opinion and by my estimation, the Snow Coaches that carry the huddled masses up onto the tongue of it will one day soon be unable to access the glacier this grinding to a halt the economic turnstile that revolves around this activity. Glacier travel will then fall back into the domain of only the most adventurous.
Is that you?
If it is, get in touch with my friends at @rockaboo_mountain_adventures and @athabascaglacier_icewalks for the original experience. And if the timing is right, try your best to book on for a specialized tour, the “Indigenous Perspectives on Big Ice” adventure that Tim Patterson of @zucmin_guiding presents in conjunction with Corin and his team at Icewalks.
In my opinion, it’s awesome!
