Today would have been John Szarkowski's 97th birthday. The influential curator was the head of photography at MoMA for almost 30 years (in addition to making photographs of his own). Among his dozens of seminal exhibitions was New Documents, mounted in 1967, which brought together the work of Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand. Szarkowski and Friedlander developed a deep friendship, and Lee made many pictures of the curator over the years.
