With only two of them left on the entire planet, is there still hope for the survival of this rhino subspecies? This past month I had the pleasure of reuniting with Najin and Fatu - the last remaining northern white rhinos on the planet - to see how these lovely ladies were doing and hear the most recent updates on the @biorescue_project, a project using assisted reproductive technologies to potentially save the northern white rhino from extinction. The project has already created 14 northern white rhino embryos using in-vitro fertilization, the challenge now is to successfully implant one of the embryos into a surrogate mother of a different subspecies who can carry the pregnancy and birth a live calf. If this process is repeated again and again with success, northern white populations could reach a sustainable level and exist as a functioning subspecies once again.
