Why do we participate in Carnival? For me, it gives me a sense of purpose through honouring my ancestral legacy of resistance through joy. A wine is not just a wine - it is a spiritual expression of joy, sensuality and cultural preservation. We were once seen as vulgar, now everyone wants to jump onto our bandwagon, bastardizing the culture and cheapening our priceless parade, whilst we stand back and let it happen. Let us bring back mas(querade) with purpose. For this year’s Toronto Carnival (Caribana) I played mas with @sugacayne. New, and boutique sized, this band worked hard to ensure they brought mas with a purpose, working with clear themes and working with dance creatives to bring the Carnival experience to life. They took care of each and everyone of their masqueraders and brought back the family feel we needed. The Caribbean community is beautiful in Toronto and being part of @sugacayne made me feel like part of something beautiful and wonderful.
