Sugar & PMS 🍬🍩🍭
Have you been told that sugar worsens PMS?
Well, there’s actually no clear link between the total amount or type of carbohydrate and the risk of PMS.
This observation likely came about because women who struggle with PMS experience higher cravings before their period ... and so are more likely to eat sugary foods in response.
But these increased cravings actually have an explanation: during this luteal phase, progesterone is high, which increases our appetite we also have a higher metabolism [ meaning we burn more calories at rest] our body is simply being intuitive.
So while sugar is not necessarily nutritious, it does offer enjoyment and satisfaction to the diet and I don’t agree that you need to cut it out completely.
.... but it’s still a wise decision to include complex carbohydrates (like wholegrains, fruits & veg), protein & healthy fats at meal times to moderate cravings and support your mood & energy levels.
