“...a metaphor of my own sense of becoming and unbecoming”—Kiyan Willams
Collecting earth from sites and spaces that hold familial and Black American histories, artist Kiyan Williams (@kiyanwilliams) creates sculptures that reveal traces of the body. Williams molds faces, limbs, and hands to meditate on the notion of the “ruined” body and its potential to transcend and generate new genealogies.
Williams’ installation “Between Starshine and Clay” (2022) takes its title from a line from the poem “won’t you celebrate with me” (1993) by Lucille Clifton. See the installation, organized by Erin Christovale (@erinzulie), on view through August 28, 2022.
