My first creepy & cute post goes to the Emerald Roach! 💚🪳 Yes, these are actually cockroaches believe it or not! Pseudoglomeris magnifica is their name, aren’t they pretty? The one with wings is a mature male, the smallest is a juvenile male, while the other two are females. If you watch to the end, you can see how they look as newborns! 💚 The females are viviparous which means they birth live young who developed inside the body of the mother, as opposed to being oviparous—laying eggs. Yesterday one of the females gave birth to the babies in this video, and they will stay on the underside of her until their first molt or so. I’ve read they stay there to be protected but they even possibly receive “milk” protein crystals from the mother. I couldn’t find any definitive proof of that as of yet, however there are indeed roaches who do exactly that, Diploptera punctata, the Pacific beetle cockroach! As you can see these are not super skittish, and they like to eat fresh fruits and pollen for the most part. The babies were spotted on an the apple in their enclosure tonight! I’d love to see someone use the awesome colors of these metallic iridescent insects as inspiration for their next hair colors 😍💚 so what do you think of these little gems?
