“The feeling of arriving at the top of polar moon came with many emotions. Brette and I had just climbed 1100m with heavy packs in marginal conditions. It was a lot of hard work.
We now stood on what seemed like the most beautiful prow overlooking the frozen Fjord with 1100m of steep, technical, and extremely exposed terrain below us. We had been dreaming of this line since we arrived in Baffin. Hours of talking it through late at night in our tent and waiting for the right day to try it.
We had 2- 60m ropes, ice & rock gear, everything in our packs was crucial to the descent. With big determined smiles, we went questing into the unknown.”
This is what was going through @christinalusti’s mind as she and teammate @bretteharrington prepared to make the first ever descent of Polar Moon. Their line on the 1100m couloir in the Northern reaches of Baffin Island has a slope angle over 50 degrees and a 140m serac in the middle of the line that must be rappelled. There was zero room for error, but the pair made none in their successful descent of Polar Moon
“Back on the Fjord, we skated away from the couloir filled with energy. The twisting couloir, and 140m serac hung far above and behind us. Christina and I had realized our vision from start to finish, but it was the years of experience in the mountains together that made it possible. The serendipity of being in the right place at the right time makes me wonder, was it merely our eyes that had sought this line out, or had the line been waiting for us all along? - Brette following the first ever descent
A massive congratulations to Brette and Christina on their incredible first descent 👏
