Donald Judd remains one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century. Though he stridently denounced it himself, Judd is known for setting the tone of the minimalist movement in the 60s and for revolutionizing the perception of American art in the world. Judd’s fascination with space and color led him to explore the medium of painting in the late 40s. Judd progressively moved from figurative to increasingly abstract imagery, then moved on to the painstaking craftsmanship of straight lines and angles. His artistic style soon moved away from illusory media and embraced constructions in which materiality was central to the work. This led to the birth of Judd’s ‘Specific Objects,’ objects that used simple, often repeated forms to explore space and the use of space. He designed his objects to coexist with the landscapes they encompassed. Judd believed that everything was intertwined and that ‘art’ happens between you, the objects, and the space. Though sculptural in nature, Judd decried any label attached to his work by the public. Judd believed that art should not represent anything but should unequivocally stand on its own and simply exist. His work was a demonstration of art at its purest. Donald Judd pioneered and shaped the ‘American’ style of art, rejecting European artistic values and paving his path toward creative freedom. Judd constantly broke his rules to explore endless possibilities across art, architecture, furniture, and literature.
