There is still time to help birds of prey with wing injuries this #GivingTuesday like Cooper's Hawk patient 22-831. He is a first-year male who arrived on October 22 from Oxnard. This patient had somehow been attacked by a dog and was bitten in the right wing, which led to an ulnar (mid-wing) fracture (second image). Luckily the radius was intact and could act as an internal splint, so this fracture could be managed by bandaging, wound care, physical therapy, and of course, pain relief and antibiotics. Incidentally, this patient also has a chronic left tibiotarsal (lower leg) fracture, which actually healed quite well on its own, likely when the bird was still a nestling or fledgling and being fed by his parents. Wild animals are so resilient! This patient is rehabilitating in a large aviary and his prognosis is excellent. He will likely be returned to the wild next week.
