Today St. Patrick's Cathedral would have hosted its twelfth Hard Hat Mass honoring this city's fallen Iron and Construction Workers killed on the job. But like everything else it had to be cancelled. The Construction Worker Memorial Mass is one of the best kept secrets of New York City. i first attended on April 26, 2018 to be beside my sister, Diane, who had lost her husband, Tommy Ryan, foreman and thirty year veteran iron worker. Tommy, 58, fell on the Verrazano Bridge when a girder gave out from under him. he lingered for days and eventually passed away from his extensive injuries on their wedding anniversary, May 27, 2017. it is a most impressive gathering of courageous hard working men and women who go to great lengths and great heights to restore, repair and strengthen our infrastructure and build stunning new hotels, offices, residents and skyscrapers. my brother in law was the first name in the litany of laborers we lost that year. pictures from 2018 and 2019 attached. 16 white helmets in 2018 and 22 white helmets in 2019 on chairs on the altar. the cathedral was packed to capacity both years spilling out into the street: bands of bag pipers marched in among many labor and trade union banners displayed as an honor guard. i hope to go again to support the other grieving families. I also hope to God the Hard Hat Memorial Mass continues!
