The author Salman Rushdie, who spent years in hiding after his novel The Satanic Verses prompted death threats from Iran, has been attacked on stage at an event in New York. Rushdie, 75, was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, a non-profit education centre in a western corner of the state, when a man stormed onto the stage and stabbed him in the neck, according to police. The author fell onto the floor, reportedly through a stage barrier, and the man was restrained. The theatre was evacuated. Rushdie’s condition was not immediately known, but a photograph taken at the centre showed a community safety officer with their hands over the author’s chest and holding his legs up in the air. Rushdie was pictured being taken away on a stretcher, with an IVF drip in his arm and blood covering his torso, hands and face. He was taken to hospital by helicopter. 🔗 Read the full story via link in bio
