Meet the mateos. Mateos are papier-mâché figures which have appeared in Oscar Murillo’s (@lacachepli) installations and performances dressed in the garb of factory and rural labourers. For #arepasytamales, work uniforms have been designed using motifs from the Frequencies canvases 🖌️. These hope for a brighter future, with marks symbolising optimism and protection - like in the Colombian tradition where mateos are burned at the end of the year to celebrate renewal. 🌀 Here are some highlights of Oscar Murillo’s previous installations featuring mateos in the exhibitions: Here and Now (Museum Ludwig @museumludwig 2019), Turner Prize (Turner Contemporary @turnercontemporary 2019), Condo (Carlos/Ishikawa @carlos_ishikawa 2017), Violent Amnesia (Kettle’s Yard @kettlesyard 2019) Image credits: (1&5) Oscar Murillo Human Resources, 2016 (Detail) Installationview, Carlos/Ishikawa, London© Oscar Murillo, Courtesy Carlos/Ishikawa, London (2) Oscar Murillo, Turner Prize 2019, Installation view, Turner Contemporary, Margate.
