Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul defeated Republican Lee Zeldin in a close race Tuesday, making history as the first woman elected governor in New York. The Associated Press declared Hochul the winner shortly before 1 a.m. as she led by about 300,000 votes with almost 90% of election districts reporting. The Democrat herself declared victory earlier, saying on Twitter: “Breaking: I’m deeply honored to be elected Governor of the State of New York.” Zeldin didn't concede the race, contending too many outstanding votes remained to be counted.
