In February, I posted about attending the premiere of The Sun Rises in The East. I wrote about how fantastic it is, how I learned about The East through @wax_poetics, and how amazing @blackownedbklyn is for creating this documentary as well as all the documentation of Black Owned Businesses in Brooklyn.
When I moved into my current neighborhood, I took being a few short blocks away from Claver Place as a good omen, even though it's just a plain old apartment building at the moment. Lots of parts of BK now are just living among the history but not the people who created it.
To be asked to write about this important film by the same publication where I learned about The East means a lot. Thanks @monk_uno for the invitation. Wax Poetics is one of my favorite publications ever. It remains a huge source of music history and information and I have all but 3 issues (looking for 4,5, and 15!). It’s an honor write for a publication that has taught me so much about music and history.
I'm not sure where things stand on distribution of this film but I hope as many people get to see it as possible and TALK ABOUT IT. Some may watch this film and shake their head as if this movement has passed. It has not. Black Nationalist movement building continues across the diaspora (do your research and your work!) and there are lessons to be learned from The East that can push us forward.
NYC, you have 2 chances to see this film next month in Brooklyn. August 4th at Restoration Plaza, and August 18th at Jitu Weusi Plaza (Fulton & Putnam). Screening this film on the 18th in a plaza named after The East’s founder will truly be an amazing night. Article link in bio.
