❗️Crystals & Sustainability❗️
I love that people are exploring the world of energy healing with crystals, but it’s important to be ethical when shopping for our favorite stones. Not all shops are created equal, and many mining practices have negative impacts on our environment and on workers health and safety. I’ll list some ethical shops below, but some things to look for if you want to make sure your own stones are ethically sourced:
1. If you can, avoid polished stones. The practice of polishing minerals & inhaling the dust is harmful to workers’ lungs.
2. The cheapest & mass produced crystals are usually the ones coming from mines utilizing child labor and unsafe labor practices, so be weary and remember the classic saying “you get what you pay for”.
3. Mining locations to avoid for environmental harm and human rights violations: Madagascar (a lot of tourmaline and carnelian is sourced here), Myanmar, Democratic Republic of Congo.
4. Some locations that practice ethical crystal mining: Australia (where I get most of mine), Canada, Finland, USA.
If your goal is to live a more fulfilling life, please continue practicing conscious consumption and awareness of the values of the businesses you support. It’s up to us an individuals to make a difference. 🤍
