Really wasn't expecting to develop such an ideological crush on @sophia_roe when I spoke with her for my latest @thezoereport story, but the #foodactivist , @beardfoundation winning #chef and TV personality known for the #emmynominated show #counterspace instantly had me with her thoughts on #foodinequality #communitybuilding and even #nycmotherhood A few gems that didn't make it into the story: 🍳 On dining out w/a child "There's no life where Sophia doesn't go out to eat. It's literally part of my job. But that doesn't mean my kid will be allowed to run wild in the restaurant. We're not doing that." 👍🏼 On developing her future kid's taste: "It's important for me as a cook to expose my kid to as many different flavors as possible--whether that's tasting ghee, lemon, vinegar or different milks. If you're looking to develop someone's taste, it's not just about the meal you have at dinner time. (Or assuming that just because a person is a kid, their taste will be limited to buttered pasta.) It's about tasting the ingredients and talking about where they come from --I've seen it work with kids. So if the kid loves hummus, showing them all of the ingredients that go into hummus, then tasting and smelling the tahini, the chickpeas, the garlic -- which is so pungent on its own-- but then you blend it all together and look at what you get!" ❤️🍳🤙🏼 On taking care of business: "I have all kinds of people around me who have kids and yeah, your life is different but that doesn't mean you're not who you are. I had a conversation with #LailaGohar @lailacooks , a chef and new mom, and I asked her about how she was managing it all and she said, 'listen the only thing being a mom does is it makes you trim the fat'--and that sounds great to me. Kids are there to destroy whatever you have planned.
