It’s always got to be one thing or the other thing, in a world of binary code and binary thought. Saint or sinner. Good or bad. My team or your team. We are all members of this strangely predatory but wonderful species, we are all problematic and all worthy of love and we are all, every one of us, the hero or villain by someone’s standards. Hatred in the name of compassion is never going to work. And no-one has ever won someone over by seeing the worst in them. So if you really want to change someone’s view - rather than feel proud of your own - start by listening to it. Behaviour breeds behaviour. Rehabilitation beats retribution. And factor some psychology into your sociology. If you harden and calcify your beliefs to the point they become fundamental doctrines the whole world will snap. This is why novels are good: they are big enough to hold paradoxes and contradictions. And why music is even better: it can find out common essence in a place beyond words.
