50 years ago, On September 24, 1972 I was given my first assignment as a high school yearbook photographer. Borrow the school’s Yashicamat, and shoot a couple of rolls of film over the weekend. I decided I would go to the Sacramento zoo , and an air show at the Sacramento executive airport. My anniversary date is unforgettable. On that date, the restored F-86 Sabre jet ( photo #1 & #10) failed to take off, and crashed into a Farrells Ice cream parlor killing 22, and injuring 25 making it the nations worst air/ground disaster ( at the time). I had left the air show a little early to wait for my Dad to pick me up. I was a block or two down the street from the Farrells. I clearly saw the Sabre jet taking off, but not gaining altitude. It looked like it was trying o take off, but it ended up going up a burm, hit a car, traveled across Freeport blvd, and then into the Farrells. I did not run to the accident. I think I was too scared of what I might see, and I didn’t want to worry my Dad. He was on his way to pick me up, and I had already told him exactly where I was ( the telephone booth that I called him from). I’m grateful to be celebrating 50 years as a photographer, and of being a part of this terrific analog community.
