Happy International Whale Shark Day! 🦈 Although we believe that every shark species deserve their own day 😅 it’s important to highlight the critical role that large marine species hold in the marine ecosystem. These gentle giants are filter feeders feed on small shrimp, fish, krill and plankton. Although they have teeth, they’re so small, being the reason they consume small prey. They can also filter more than 6,000 litres of water an hour through their gills! Sadly, they’re listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and are threatened with extinction. Common threats to their survival are being caught in fisheries (both legal and illegal), targeted for their fins for the shark finning trade and are privy to boat accidents.
