‘What It Is’ is out today. It’s pretty surreal to me that this thing I’ve been toiling over, that so deeply represents the last two years of my life, is now out in the world for everyone to receive. My first album. It may just be 8 songs but it feels like it tells such a full story of what was surely the most difficult season of my life. Stories borne in isolation about shame, regret, hope, nostalgia, feeling misunderstood, and ultimately acceptance. And now, those stories don’t belong to me anymore. They belong to the listener. To anyone who finds their own meaning in the songs. That has to be my favourite part about making music. These songs are so personal to me, and yet the moment I release them, they become a part of something so much bigger than me, and they are no longer mine. Thank you, to everyone who’s listened, for taking them off my hands. Thank you @barbermattic, the album’s producer, who ushered me through this process with patience and kindness and a musical expertise that is evident in the final product. We recorded this in April of 2021, and he has been my sounding board every step of the way. There would be no album without him.
