Ancient trees are living sculptures that look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a fairy tale. Old Man of Calke is one such relic - an oak tree that’s believed to be over 1,000 years old, older than the abbey itself in the grounds of Calke Abbey. Its decaying branches and gnarly old trunk provide homes to thousands of rare invertebrates, including 350 different types of beetle, such as the cobweb beetle (Ctesias serra). Find out more fascinating facts about our ancient trees in the '50 Great Trees of the National Trust' book available in our shops and online. #NationalTrust Photo: James Woodcock
