Imagine a job that lets you get up close and personal with one of the world’s most famous statues. It’s one perk of being the in-house restorer of the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy, where Eleonora Pucci’s task is to regularly dust Michelangelo’s David, which she described recently as exhilarating, if somewhat nerve-racking. In order to clean the 17-foot-high statue, a specialized team constructs a scaffold tower in the rotunda that houses the David every two months. Pucci begins the job with a photographic close-up to better track any wear and tear on the statue and to verify how much dust and debris (of microscopic dimension) has settled on it since the last time it was cleaned, which can change seasonally. Using a smallish brush with synthetic bristles Pucci strokes David’s head, raising particles that were immediately sucked up by a small vacuum cleaner strapped to her back, specially designed to be used on museum statuary and architecture.
