Memories of the intimate workshop 'Sculptural Textiles - Drawing with the Unwanted', which I ideated and facilitated at The Hepworth Wakefield @hepworthwakefield this month.
A small group of five women joined the event. We drew, looked at publications, and discussed the pleasures of collecting fabrics - especially when one does not (yet) know what to do with them ๐งต. We experimented with (clean) used textiles brought by the participants and others supplied by the museum and myself. We made knots, cuts, some sewing and needle works. We also talked about weaving, natural dye, archiving and creating. This workshop was based on the participant's existing experiences of textiles, a medium so very often associated with the feminine and the domestic, my art practice, and of course, the work of Sheila Hicks, whose exhibition we visited as a small group.
This workshop was part of The Hepworth Wakefield's programme associated with Sheila Hicks' first retrospective in the UK. Thank you to all the participants; it was lovely to meet you and the team of The Hepworth Wakefield for the welcome.
I would love to facilitate more of such textile-related workshops and am available for late 2022 and 2023, so please contact me to discuss your ideas ๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐ป๐งถ.
My next workshops focused on drawing and gardening will take place at Camden Art Centre and Southwark Park Galleries, London.
