‘Germany—the war that is won’
.
In June 1945, Lee published this article in British Vogue in which she acted as a sombre tour guide, giving readers an insight into the state of Germany at the end of the war. Throughout the piece, she makes her disgust and anger at the injustices of the conflict clear:
“My fine Baedecker tour of Germany includes many such places as Buchenwald which were not mentioned in my 1913 edition, and if there is a later one I doubt if they ever mentioned it there, either, because no one in Germany has ever heard of a concentration camp, and I guess they didn’t want any tourist business either. Visitors took one-way tickets only, in any case, and if they lived long enough they had plenty of time to learn the places of interest, both historic and modern, by personal and practical experimentation. Now, in spite of the fact that the local Gestapo Rotary Club did no advertising, a constant stream of tourists arrives in this camp to see the horrors. They are not in the least like the rubbernecks of the blitz, nor are they idle curiosity seekers. They are not a funeral procession, nor are they holiday-makers altogether.”
