Issue 04 features Fauteuil Grand Confort by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand.
The greatness of the Grand Confort lies not simply in “comfort.” When it first appeared in 1928, it embodied a radical new idea—“a chair is a machine for sitting”—and introduced an innovative image using tubular steel, a cutting-edge material at the time. Its form borrows vertical and horizontal elements, modular concepts, and pilotis often seen in Le Corbusier’s architecture, reminding us of his words that a chair is also architecture. In other words, the Grand Confort is a masterpiece where pure machine-like form, disciplined structural order, and their interconnections come together to create a profound beauty.
