The @cierrabrittongallery is proud to present in 1-54 Contemporary Art Fair 2022 New York, from May 19-22, 2022. In the gallery’s first-ever art fair, CBG will exhibit a collection of figurative paintings by Jewel Ham, charcoal drawings by Bre Andy, and mixed-media works on paper by Lewinale Havette that explores color theory in relation to Black skin. All three artists give their figures agency to take up space in their own worlds while engaging the viewer to investigate the unique usage of colors and grayscale tones in their skin as opposed to the traditional shades of brown. Jewel Ham’s unflinching figures in her paintings are known to have warm red and pink-tone skin which she intentionally uses to depict bloodline. Ham captures feelings and experiences rooted in her upbringing in Charlotte, NC that invite viewers to empathize with the subjects while also bringing visibility to viewers who can relate to these figures in some way. Tonally opposite, Lewinale Havette’s painterly figures live in fictional worlds dripped in deep blue tones. Born in Liberia and influenced by the women in her family, Havette converts her memories, visions, and dreams into art by comingling cool hues to create moments of power and independence. Representing skin tone in charcoal, contrasted with the vibrant, dry pastels used for clothing and background, Bre Andy’s contemplative figures embellished with beauty marks, rolls, and wrinkles, still embrace color through their makeup and wardrobe made with oil pastels. We are thrilled to welcome you all to the fair from May 19-22, 2022!
