*TW: fatphobia* Fatphobia even exists amongst the women we admire. You wouldn’t be alone if you felt quite hurt when reading this post by Britney Spears. Because, when it’s someone you’ve looked at or up to and enjoyed your whole life, sometimes it can feel a little personal. Or just when it's blatant unfiltered fatphobia, yep. That'll get you too. As women we do know all too well the pressures of “thinness” and fitting in with beauty standards. So naturally, as we would anyone else, we empathise wholeheartedly when we hear yet another woman is struggling with body image and confidence. It can be a brutal pressure that hits us, whether that’s from the media, family, strangers and even ourselves. All of that plus the worlds eyes on you and a conservatorship must be an unimaginable overwhelming strain on your life and your mental health. But what makes us uncomfortable here, besides an offensive quote masked in cute pastels and a handwritten font, is the lack of awareness. We hoped to find in the caption a revolution of self-awareness and how her past experiences shaped how she views her body VS how she sees it today having overcome that. It would have been brutally honest and somewhat of a difficult discussion but nonetheless the kind of uncomfortable discussions we should be having as a society to unlearn fatphobia. It's important we overcome the idea of thinness > fatness. We can say from personal experience changing alllllll the elements around you won't change how you view yourself. The work you have to do for body acceptable and love is all up here *points to brain*. Which also means Christina Aguilera's back up dancers won't make you feel better either. Stop using people in larger bodies to make you feel better about yourself. We need to stop pitting one another against each other, in some sort of internal competition where you come out on top because you're a few dress sizes smaller than the person to your left.
