Dutch artist and film director, Laura Hermanides, directs and stars with her mother, in an intimate and moving film that highlights the importance of maternal and filial support when facing episodes of accentuated vulnerability. Both women suffer at different times in their lives from the same sense of incomprehension that prevents them from moving forward. In a phone call, Laura looks for an answer in the person who has given her life, ready to know what it is like to want to take it away. She needs her mother to take her in her arms, but instead, their bodies unite in a wrestling fight to end the pain. . The fragility in which society typecasts Hermanides' femininity is reflected in the ring. A society that responds to misguided expectations of women, which end up having repercussions on the artist. MomMy not only alludes to the predetermined ideas of female innocence and naivety, it is also an appeal to be saved and returned to the illusion of a place where everything is warm and happy; the childhood. By experimenting with double exposure, Hermanides uses 16mm analogue film in order to slowly reveal the thematic layers of her struggles. While with confusion wrestling her mother images start dripping through that iconically depict the fight with her mother’s examples, femininity, and life in general. . Laura Hermanides (1988, Amsterdam, NL) graduated in 2012 from the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam. She works mainly as a writer/director and composer on her own independent films; documentary, fiction and experimental video art.
